Founded in 2021, SUBJECT OBJECT is an award-winning theatre company, based in the East Midlands UK.
We specialise in formally-bold new-writing with global ideas. We are led by award-winning writer Nathan Ellis, alongside Executive Producer Eve Allin. Our show work.txt (a play without actors) (★★★★★ Observer) has so far been translated into seven languages and performed on six continents.
Our second show Instructions won a Scotsman Fringe First Award 2024.
We have twice been supported by Farnham Maltings at Caravan, their showcase of the best new work being made in England.
At the Prague Quadrennial 2024, Nathan spoke about the company's work on theatre and transhumanism in a talk entitled Scenes for Robots: Automation, Dehumanisation, and Playwriting.
We also run workshops for emerging writers and theatremakers across the world, as well as long-form Writing Groups.
The company are a Creative Associate of Nottingham Playhouse.

Nathan Ellis is a British writer and Artistic Director of SUBJECT OBJECT. He was a member of the Royal Court Invitation Writers’ Supergroup 2018-19 led by Alice Birch and Ali Mcdowall. He was a member of the Channel 4 Screenwriting Group 2023 and BBC WritersRoom Drama Room 2021-22. In 2020 his play SUPER HIGH RESOLUTION was Shortlisted for the Verity Bargate Award. It was performed at the Soho Theatre in 2022 directed by Blanche McIntyre (★★★★★ Daily Mail) and in the repertoire at Staatstheater Kassel in 2023 directed by Manon Pfrunder. His play work.txt (a play without actors) opened at the Soho Theatre in 2022 and received ★★★★★ from The Guardian as well as winning awards at the Adelaide Fringe and Dublin Fringe and being invited to the Caravan International Showcase 2022. The show is currently on an international tour (Australia, Germany, Brazil, Italy, the Netherlands, Canada, Egypt) and has been translated into six languages. His first play NO ONE IS COMING TO SAVE YOU ('a blazing debut' The Stage) was invited to Incoming Festival 2019 and in 2023 in Italian at Teatro Belli, Rome. He is a Creative Associate of the Nottingham Playhouse and is represented in the UK by Giles Smart at United Agents and by Bastian Häfner at Felix-Bloch Erben in Germany.

Harry Halliday is an Associate Artist at SUBJECT OBJECT and has been production and technical manager for SUBJECT OBJECT since 2020. He did technical design for work.txt and production managed the show across festivals in eleven countries. He also did the technical and video-system design for INSTRUCTIONS, including its tour in China. Alongside this he is a software developer working on Shared Virtual Reality.

Eve Allin is executive producer of SUBJECT OBJECT, having produced the international tour of work.txt (★★★★★ The Guardian) in 2022-2023. In 2022, Eve was Associate Producer at Soho Theatre for Super High Resolution by Nathan Ellis and is returning as Associate on Sam Grabiner's Boys on the Verge of Tears in April 2024. She is the producer for internationally award-winning artists Jaz Woodcock-Stewart (Civilisation, ★★★★ The Guardian) and Jennifer Jackson. She is also Executive Producer at Broccoli Arts, a production company making work for/by/about lesbian, bisexual and queer people who experience misogyny. Broccoli productions include This Might Not Be It by Sophia Chetin-Leuner (Bush Theatre, 2024), Salty Irina by Eve Leigh (Summerhall, 2023) Before I Was a Bear by Eleanor Tindall (Soho Theatre, 2022). Eve is a Stage One supported producer.
